Wi-Fi Doesn’t Mean What You Think It Does

Wi-Fi Doesn’t Mean What You Think It Does, and some people are very eager to argue this simple truth down any chance that they get. After all, how could one of the most compelling technological advancements of our time not have a serious name?

Some people argue that the term Wi-Fi is an abbreviated form of the term “wireless fidelity” as if it were a play on the old music industry term “high fidelity”. This is believed simply because the original marketing campaign held the tag line: “The standard for wireless fidelity”.Didn’t catch that? This explains it. In actuality, this tag line was suppose to be the play on words indicating to consumers that the term is nothing more than a hip brand name with no meaning.

Basically, ten possible names were through out there at a marketing conference. The term “Wi-Fi” probably just seemed to be the one that would appeal the heaviest to this “hip”, web cafe based generation. People have a very hard time accepting the fact that the branded name of a particular technology (especially one so important to modern living) does not have a name that means anything. It is not uncommon for mankind to desire the type of clever name that actually DESCRIBES a particular technology is some type of way.
